Frequently Asked RV Sales, Service and Repair Questions

Financing, Loans and Tax Information

Q. Why should I finance my RV?
RV Financing
A.
When you finance your RV purchase instead of liquidating assets, paying cash or using the equity in your home, you maintain your personal financial flexibility. Plus, your RV loan can qualify for the same tax benefits as a mortgage for a second or vacation home.

Q. What is the difference between Banks & Credit Unions?
RV Bank and Credit Union Loans
A.
Our banks most often offer a longer term than Credit Unions, to help meet the desired payment. Credit Union contracts can require more than just the RV for collateral. Be sure to read all contracts before signing. Discloser is extremely important.

RV Extended Service Agreement Transfer and Cancellation

Q. Can I buy these protection plans cheaper online or somewhere else?
Buying RV Extended Service Agreements Online
A.
Yes, but make sure you are clear about what you are buying. Who is the company, are they reliable, will the contract be honored at any repair facility? Check all the coverages, terms, exemptions, and deductibles. And remember, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

Q. Is the interest charged on my RV purchase tax deductible?
Tax Deductible RV Loan Interest
A.
According to the IRS, interest paid on an RV loan may be tax-deductible as a second home. IRS Pub. 936 states: "Fully deductible interest. In most cases, you will be able to deduct all of your home mortgage interest. Whether it is all deductible depends on the date you took out the mortgage, the amount of the mortgage, and your use of its proceeds ... "For you to take a home mortgage interest deduction, your debt must be secured by a qualified home. This means your main home or your second home. A home includes a house, condominium, cooperative, mobile home, house trailer, boat, or similar property that has sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities." Be sure to check with your tax advsior for more details.

Service and Maintenance Information

Q. What do I have to do, if anything, to the rubber roof on my RV?
Rubber Roof Maintenance
A.
The manufacturer of the rubber roof warrantees the materials to be free of defects. The warranty does not cover wear or tear due to maintenance. You, as the customer, are responsible for inspecting the roof twice a year. Look at the edges as well as any openings in the roof such as skylights, plumbing vents, antennas, etc. If you see something that looks cracked or gapped, seal it. It costs very little to do the routine maintenance opposed to a major roof repair later. We do offer this service as well if you prefer not to do it yourself.

Q. What do I have to do to my RV at the end of the season?
RV Winterization
A.
You must winterize your RV to prevent it from having frozen water lines and appliances such as water heater and icemaker. You will find a guide to winterizing on our website or we do provide this as a service if you would prefer not to do it yourself. You may want to cover your RV. If you do cover it, please don't use a tarp. A tarp is not designed to breathe the way an actual RV cover is. The use of a tarp traps moisture/condensation inside the RV. Also, the tarp will ultimately chafe the roof on the corners as the inevitable wind blows the tarp. Use of tire covers is recommended. The ground does not hurt the tires, but the sun does. Proper use of tire covers will prolong the life of your tires, saving you hundreds of dollars in the long run. Some people recommend storing your RV slightly off level so as to encourage water to run off. This is personal preference. We do suggest leaving the refrigerator door ajar so as not to encourage mold/mildew from growing. Regarding battery storage, it is best if you remove your battery and keep it inside your garage. This will prolong the life of your battery. If you do remove your battery, you may want to mark the cables so you know how to hook them up in the spring.

Q. When should I pack my wheel bearings?
RV Wheel Bearing Service
A.
Most manufacturers recommend between 3000-3500 miles or every year. Check your owner's manual. If your manual isn't clear, err on the side of caution. You want to make sure you keep the seals/bearings fresh and lubricated. It can cause a lot of problems if you neglect your wheels. It is a good idea to do a full wheel inspection when you do this. The wheels generate a lot of heat and the grease will break down due to this. The bearings need to be removed, cleaned, inspected and repacked with new grease every 6,000 miles of towing or every year regardless of miles. This service will prevent costly repairs and premature failure of the bearing assembly. All seals are replaced. We do have all of the items necessary to do this, but again, it is messy as well as time consuming, and if you prefer not to do it yourself we can certainly handle this job as well.

Q. What kind of services do my tires and brakes need?
RV Tire and Brake Service
A.
The brakes on your trailer need to be serviced yearly to assure proper operation. The brake shoes require adjusting and the operation of the electrical system needs to be checked. Rotate tires for maximum wear. Note: Trailer brakes are not self-adjusting.

Q. What should I know about RV roof and seam sealants?
RV Roof and Seam Sealants
A.
Water intrusion causes damage and delamination to the coach structure. Inspecting yearly and filling small voids in the sealants can prevent this from becoming a costly repair. In some cases, a full scrape, buff and reseal may be necessary. Owners are responsible for inspecting sealants every 90 days.

Q. What are the proper service requirements for my RV's LP gas appliances?
RV LP Appliance Maintenance
A.
Corrosion in the burner assembly leads to high resistance for the igniters. The resistance leads to premature failure of costly electrical parts. The LP portion of these appliances, just as your home heating systems, needs to be cleaned and adjusted. This service needs to be performed yearly on the refrigerator, furnace, water heater and range.

Q. How should I insure my RV's LP gas system safety?
RV LP Appliance Safety
A.
This is a safety issue. The time to find a leak is not when you smell LP, most leaks start small and progress. The LP leak check is performed at the time of purchase and every time an LP fitting is disconnected. You need to ensure this service is performed yearly.
